Is Education Losing the Race with Technology? AI's Progress in Maths and Reading

The present report follows up the OECD’s Survey of Adult Skills (PIAAC), collecting expert judgements in 2021 on whether computers can solve the PIAAC literacy and numeracy tests. It is part of a comprehensive ongoing project on assessing AI. This study shows that AI could potentially outperform large shares of the population on PIAAC – 90% of adults in literacy and 57-88% of adults in numeracy.

PIAAC 2nd Cycle

The Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) measures adults’ proficiency in key cognitive and workplace areas, i.e., literacy, numeracy, and problem solving. PIAAC 2nd Cycle is taking place from 2018-2024 with the participation of over 30 countries and economies. The first round of data collection will take place in 2022-2023, and the results will be published in 2024. We have recently published the Fact Sheet and Framework pages.

The Skill Level of the Average College Graduate Varies Enormously Across Countries

In his article, Jason Richwine discusses, based on data from OECD's PIAAC data, that the skill level of college graduates differs across countries. He bases this observation on the indicators that immigrant college graduates in the US hold lower-skilled jobs than the native college graduates. This opinion is furthered by the observation that the immigrants are still lacking behind in poverty, welfare and income measures despite increasing numbers of immigrant college graduates.

This article expresses that the college graduates do not have the necessary skills to obtain a high earning job. with skills lacking in literacy and numeracy, specifically.

Do Smarter Teachers Make Smarter Students?

Publications

Hanushek, Piopiunik and Wiederhold, in their article, explore the association of teacher's cognitive ability with student's performance. They use PISA and PIAAC studies to study the causal relationship. Furthermore, they examine how a smarter teacher workforce can be obtained given a relationship between the two exists.
