LaNA 2023 Linking Study Report Now Available

LaNA report

LaNA serves as a flexible, off-cycle assessment, providing country-level insights within an international context. By linking LaNA results to the TIMSS and PIRLS scales, the study established new Basic International Benchmarks in reading and mathematics, offering a clearer picture of student performance at the lower end of the achievement scale.

Participating countries: Burkina Faso, Egypt, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestinian National Authority, and Senegal.

Key Findings

  • Mathematics: 70% of students across the six participating countries reached the new Basic International Benchmark.
  • Reading: 55% of students met the new Basic International Benchmark.
  • Gender differences: Reading results followed trends observed in PIRLS 2021, with girls generally outperforming boys. In mathematics, no significant gender differences were found, in contrast to TIMSS 2023, where boys tended to score higher.
  • School attendance: 22% of students reported being absent at least once a week, with regular attendance linked to higher achievement.
  • Student motivation: A strong correlation was found between students' enjoyment of reading and mathematics and their performance, aligning with findings from PIRLS 2021 and TIMSS 2023.

The international database is expected to be released later this year.
