Theme: Knowing and Acting: The changing conditions and potentials of education research

Introduction:

The European Conference on Educational Research (ECER) is one of the largest annual gatherings in the field of education research. It provides a platform for sharing cutting-edge research, fostering collaboration, and engaging in critical discussions on education systems, learning, and policy developments.

ECER 2026 theme “Knowing and Acting: The changing conditions and potentials of education research” focuses on how educational research produces knowledge and how this knowledge is translated into action within rapidly changing social, political, and technological contexts. It highlights the close relationship between understanding and doing research, emphasizing that knowledge is not only generated but also shaped by the conditions in which it is produced and used. The theme further reflects on the evolving responsibilities and opportunities of researchers in addressing contemporary challenges such as inequality, sustainability, and digital transformation, and considers how educational research can remain relevant and impactful in supporting policy, practice, and broader societal development.
