PISA in Focus: Can a Growth Mindset Help Disadvantaged Students Close the Gap?

PISA in Focus is a series of monthly education policy-oriented notes designed to describe a PISA topic in a concise, user-friendly way. April issues focuses on the impact of the growth mindset over students’ performance and well being.

Considering, that in mindset theory, growth mindset is opposed to fixed mindset, the PISA 2018 results provide useful insight to reflect on what role mindset plays in performance on reading, science and mathematics. With the COVID pandemic dragging on, having a growth mindset may be even more critical. The disruptive experience of school closure impact students differently due to their differences, learning goals strategies. While for some this may an enriching experience, for other it may be devastating. This issue of PISA in Focus analyses the impact of a growth mindset on the performance and well-being of 15-year-old students, and its potential implications in terms of equity finding that mindset could be a stronger predictor of academic success than available resources for low-income students.
